Alpha Phi Foundation is pleased to announce a $30,000 heritage challenge gift made possible through the generosity of Kathleen Feeney Hiemstra (Delta Theta, Western Michigan University). This gift will help fund a unique, three-volume book project that will bring our rich history to life in an accessible and entertaining way.

Kathy has agreed to use her $30,000 gift as a challenge to
all Alpha Phis to raise matching funds through individual donations to help protect and promote our heritage. “It is my hope that this gift will inspire my sisters to support one of our most important assets,” said Hiemstra.Founders

Alpha Phi Foundation, with the help of the Heritage Committee and Archivist Jenny Thompson (Alpha Lambda-Alumna), will publish the narrative, novel-style series to preserve and share Alpha Phi’s history. The series will bring to life the personalities and perspectives of our Founders and other sisters of note who carried out the Hand to Hand, Heart to Heart traditions of Alpha Phi. It will describe the nearly 140-year old journey of sisterhood in their words and ours. Additionally, it will celebrate Alpha Phi’s many “firsts” and our continued pioneering spirit to present day. In this keepsake series, readers will:

  • Journey to the birthplace of Alpha Phi and retrace its founding at Syracuse University
  • Learn more about the Founders and other early members
  • Discover how social issues, religion, politics, the economy, changing campus culture and women’s roles impacted the history of our Fraternity
  • Remember, honor and celebrate Alpha Phi’s innovations, traditions, chapters, conventions and sisters of note

The first volume will be published and available for sale at the 2012 Alpha Phi Convention in Phoenix, Arizona. The remaining two volumes will be written and published in the biennia to follow, with a goal to be completed no later than 2016.

“Because of Kathy’s generosity, we have a unique opportunity to remember our roots and those who have walked before us and among us to make Alpha Phi what it is today,” said Ann Carstensen, executive director of Alpha Phi Foundation.

Kathy will match all donations dollar for dollar up to her $30,000 gift, providing a total of $60,000 in support of this project. It is with your help that we will be successful!
